The USDA, the Department of Transportation and the Department of Energy in the United States have introduced the “Grand Challenge” – a goal of supporting the production of 35 billion gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2050.

The USDA’s role in the project comes with challenges. Sufficient biomass feedstock must be produced at the right price for its conversion to SAF, and to ensure carbon accounts for the conservation practices adopted on U.S. farms that produce feedstock.

The agency is investing in research to address the challenges. The goal of the Grand Challenge is to expand the use of SAF to meet 100 per cent of fuel demands in the U.S. by 2050.
